Two dogs that were trapped in a gold mine shaft near Cripple Cripple have gotten out and animal control took them home.

Yesterday rescuers were trying to coax the dogs out of a Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine with   food, treats and water. It didn’t work.

Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Mikel Baker said officials couldn’t go in after the dogs because they were worried about human safety in sending a search-and-rescue team down the 500-foot Ironclad Mine. It is unclear how long the dogs were there.

The dogs, a Border Collie and a smaller dog crawled out early this morning and a Teller County Animal Control officer took them home around 10am.
