It started out as a nice evening walk in a northeast Colorado Springs neighborhood with her dog, but Tammira Martinez says it ended terribly.

Last night a man walking  a Greyhound shot and killed Martinez’ dog after the two dogs got into a fight.

The man pulled out a gun and fired point blank at her Bullmastiff Plato, killing him on the spot.

Martinez claims that the Greyhound was on a retractable leash and started walking toward her dog. Flato leaped toward the Greyhound and pulled away from Martinez.

Martinez says that they fight wasn’t serious and if he would have given her a moment the whole thing would have ended quickly without bloodshed.

“I needed two seconds to grab the leash of my dog and pull him back,” said a tearful Martinez. “But I wasn’t even given that opportunity before he shot my dog.”

Martinez says the Greyhound was never injured.

We have not been able to get a hold of the owner of the Greyhound, but Sgt Steve Noblitt with the Colorado Springs Police Department says it doesn’t appear that he violated any laws.  He had a permit to carry the gun, he fired the weapon in a way to not threaten others, and there was reasonable belief to believe that he and/or his dog was in danger.   The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is investigating  the case to see if it falls under and Animal Cruetly laws.  They are expected to hold a press conference this afternoon.

No where in your article does it state that her 140 Bull mastiff knocked her down and drug her 15 ft. over a grassy knoll, which was stated in the online police report.

No one wins in a situation like this. Had she had control over her dog, this would not be an issue today.

    So sorry for all involved.

So sad…I have 3 dogs and they are very curious but nice. They are big and people get scared of them and after they get to know them they can tell how nice they are. he really should have tried to separate them and if he could have not then did what he did.
