Is Michael Vick really sorry? I’m not convinced….

Michael Vick has made an effort to tell people about how bad dog fighting is, but his most recent attempt didn’t convince me that he has any remorse for the animals.  In fact listening to Vick I am pretty sure his only concern is the damage he did to his football career.

Vick told a sparse crowd at a Washington church on Tuesday that dog fighting is pointless and he doesn’t know why he risked his career for it.

“I got caught up in the culture,” the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback said at Covenant Baptist Church, in one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. “I never thought that I would get caught.”

The former Atlanta Falcons star was released from federal custody July 20 after serving 18 months of a 23-month sentence for running the ring in Surry County, Va.

The church appearance was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States. Vick has been working with the group since his release and has appeared at similar events in Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia.

"Dog lover" Michael Vick says he made "bad decisions".

"Dog lover" Michael Vick says he used "poor judgement".

“I used poor judgment. I had people around me who didn’t have my best interests at heart,” he said.

When he played for the Falcons, Vick said, he would go home every week to fight dogs.

“For what reason, I don’t know to this day,” he said. “Something so pointless.”

Vick, who came to the church with his fiancée and their children, said he feels lucky to be alive after being involved in a dangerous subculture.

Did it sound like Vick was concerned about the dogs he beat and tortured?  It didn’t to me either.  I am pretty sure this is a deal created by Vick’s manager, the NFL, and the Humane Society of the United States.  I think it is transparent and Vick would be better off just keeping quiet rather than irritating people with his shallow attempt to make a very big wrong right.   At least he could say that he feels for the animals that were abused for his amusement, but he never seems to mention that on his little speaking engagements.

Well I am just glad he didn’t end up in Denver!
