Dog fighting app causes fur to fly

dog-ward1There’s an “app” for just about  everything, but a  new dog fighting game made for Android phones has animal rights activists fighting mad, so mad that they may have actually stopped the game’s distribution.  Even former dog fighting kennel owner Michael Vick has taken a stand against the game.

The “Dog Wars” app by Kage Games allows users to feed, water, train and fight their  virtual Pit Bull against other player’s dog.  Their slogan is “Raise your dog to beat the best.”

Earlier this week the developer defended the controversial concept as just a fantasy game. The website even seemed to be expecting the controversy noting on the game’s description several comments like “ It is just A VIDEO GAME”,

“Perhaps one day we will make gerbil wars or beta fish wars for people who can’t understand fantasy role play games”,  and  “Just go slingshot some virtual birds to kill some virtual pigs”.

Well they were right; the app, which is available for free, sparked outrage from animal rights groups. The Humane Society also issued a statement with Eagles quarterback Michael Vick who served prison time for his involvement in a dogfighting ring.

“I’ve come to learn the hard way that dogfighting is a dead-end street,” Vick said. “Now, I am on the right side of this issue, and I think it’s important to send the smart message to kids, and not glorify this form of animal cruelty, even in an Android app.”

Even locally people have raised concerns.  Lauren Fox with All Breed Rescue in Colorado Springs works with abused dogs, many of them Pit Bulls, to try and get them socialized so they can be adopted.  Fox says that she finds the game “disappointing” and “disgusting”, saying that games like this further demonizes the Pit Bull breed in the publics eye.

But gamers say it is not any different than playing games like Mortal Kombat or Call of Duty where people are bruatally killed.

While animal rights activists are speaking out against the game, Android Market customers have downloaded the app over 50,000 times and have given it a rating of four out of five stars.

Right now people are saying they can’t download the game; but there is no official word on whether or not Google pulled the Andriod app.

I find this very disturbing and just plane disgusting! Anything that glorifies animal cruelty should be banned. I hope they shut them down right away.
