Dog lovers won’t want to miss the Colorado Springs Kennel Club Dog Show going on this weekend.

15-hundred dogs from around the country will be at the show which starts on Friday, June 10th and runs through Sunday.  Show hours are 8am to 6pm.

A "junior handler" is sitting ringside with her Westie.

The event will be held at the Norris-Penrose Event Center just off 8th Street and both parking and admission are free.

If you are looking to get a dog this is a great place to see many different breeds and talk to the people who own them and decide if it is the right dog for you. If you just love dogs it is fun to see all the different breeds looking their best. There will also performance events and vendors selling dog items.

Some tips if you go. Always ask before petting a dog. This is always a good rule of thumb, but at shows it is not only a safety issue, many breeds require a lot of grooming before going into the ring so you don’t want to mess up a perfect coif.! If you want to talk to folks make sure they are done showing before approaching them.

Two of the bigger show dogs. Left a Tibetan Mastiff in the show ring and a right is a Newfoundland in the grooming area getting ready.

Please leave you dogs home. I know, I know, you’dthink that a dog show would be the perfect place to take the dog on an outing, but they aren’t allowed. It isn’t because show people don’t want their “blue bloods” messing with the common dog, in fact most show dog people love dogs no matter what they are. The reason is that dog shows get packed with people and pooches and this can be very stressful and in some cases dangerous for dogs that aren’t used to that kind of activity.
