DENVER – Police have taken into custody a man they believe stabbed a female American Bulldog in the face.

Denver Police say Matthew Davon Weatherspoon was arrested Monday morning. He is being held for investigation of felony animal cruelty.

The dog is a 6-month-old American Bulldog puppy named Diamond. Authorities say she suffered from multiple stab wounds.

Alameda East Veterinary Hospital spokesperson Lauren Immel told KUSA-TV the bulldog was in surgery Monday and has moved to the ICU Tuesday. Her prognosis is good and she is expected to survive.

The Denver District Attorney’s office says it will decide in 24 to 48 hours whether to file charges against Weatherspoon.

Colorado’s Helping Hands Foundation will help cover Diamond’s medical expenses.

What a senseless act!! I hope they file all the charges possible and that the jerk is convicted. Poor puppy, I hope she gets better soon. Was this guy her owner and if not, where is the owners? What was this guys pathetic excuse for attacking this animal?

This man needs to be stabbed in the same way and areas that he did to this dog. I’m so glad he has been apprehended. There is no reason for this. It is insanity. So sad. Studies show people who behave this way towards animals will do the same towards people if the right opportunity presents itself. He needs counseling. I’ll bet that dog still wags her tail in spite of it all.

The person or persons who did this horrendous crime should be financially responsible for making restitution costs for the surgery and care.
