An alarming report of someone deliberately poisoning or injuring dogs has been freaking out dog owners who enjoy dog parks; but is there really anything to worry about?

The story circulating like wildfire throughout social media sites like Facebook looks like this:

PARK ALERT: We have received two notices. (1) Nails wrapped in cheese at dog parks in Chicago and Massachusetts (see pic). (2) from some friends that in Augusta Maine dog park, antifreeze is being found in doggie water bowls. Please beware and be careful and PLEASE SHARE and spread the word!

The rumor has hit local dog park Facebook sites , like Friends of Bear Creek Dog Park and has had people calling and emailing our newsroom here at News 5.

Web resources like That’s and Snopes have also looked into the cheese rumors.

Well the good news is that the cheese with nails is an isolated incident that actually happened in Buenos Aires and the antifreeze in the water bowls appears to be completely unfounded.

That said it is better safe than sorry and it is always a good idea to keep an eye on your pet at a dog park.  Crazy rumors aside there are dangers like aggressive dogs, mushrooms, rattlesnakes, and other wild critters that make their homes here too.

While there is no way to 100% keep your pet safe, paying close attention to your dog and his/her surroundings can help.  If you do find something out of the ordinary in the park like food set out, don’t let your dog eat it.  Pick it up and put it a bag and let the police or Humane Society know what you found.
