dogstarv2A malnourished dog in Pennsylvania was rescued from a flea-infested  basement last week and is receiving around-the-clock critical care at the Delco SPCA, according to spokesperson Justina Calgiano.

Workers called to repair a burst water heater last Tuesday found Precious, a 3-year old black pit bull terrier mix, in the feces-covered basement . She weighed 19 pounds when she was found, and according to Calgiano she should be tipping the scales at about 45 pounds. The dog is unable to walk or even hold her head up due to severe malnourishment.

Her former owner was cited yesterday for failure to provide sustenance and failure to provide veterinary care. Witnesses told SPCA investigators that Precious was starved deliberately and that her mother was a victim of the same neglect a couple of years ago. Precious is severely anemic and a flea infestation and is suffering from a bilateral ear infection. She is receiving fluids and a strictly regimented diet at the Delco SPCA after a visit to an emergency veterinary hospital last Tuesday.

Precious’ owner willfully signed over ownership of the dog to the SPCA, Calgiano said.

“Our hope is that we can fully rehabilitate her,” Calgiano said.

Anyone interested in donating to Precious’ care can visit delcospca.org/donations or send a check to the Delco SPCA at 555 Sandy Bank Road, Media, PA 19063. Checks can be made payable to the Delaware County SPCA with a note that the donation is fort Precious’ care.
