lionDeputies shot and killed a mountain lion after it attacked a family dog at a home in Gypsum on Saturday.

The Eagle County Sheriffs Office says deputies were called to a home around 2 a.m. on a report that a lion had attacked a 150-pound Great Pyrenees.

Once deputies arrived on scene, they found the dog in the cougar’s mouth.

The dog’s owner, Tara Haymond, says she grabbed a shotgun and hit the cougar with it when she couldn’t find ammunition, but then decided to call deputies.

The deputies shot and killed the mountain lion and because the dog had difficultly breathing and was badly hurt, the deputies also shot the dog at the owners request.

The Division of Wildlife took the mountain lion to be tested for rabies. The cougar was estimated to be young, only about 8 months to a year old.

Wildlife officials say the mountain lion looked very skinny and may have been sick, starving or both.
